US Congresswomen Wear Pink to Protest Trump's Policies
During President Donald Trump's recent speech to a joint session of Congress, many Democratic congresswomen made a bold statement by wearing pink. The color choice was a deliberate protest against Trump's policies, which they believe harm women and families.
Congresswoman Teresa Leger Fernandez of New Mexico, who leads the Democratic Women's Caucus, explained that the color pink represents "our protest against Trump's policies that negatively impact women and families." She added, "Pink symbolizes power and protest. It's time to amplify our opposition and confront Trump loudly and clearly."
Before the speech, the Democratic Women's Caucus, which consists of 96 members, gathered outside the Capitol Building to express their opposition to Trump. Leger Fernandez emphasized that "women cannot afford Trump's policies," stating, "They cost us dearly in terms of money, health, life, and safety. From the cradle to the grave, this man and his Republican agenda have been devastating for American women. We want the world to know that we stand here in protest, we stand strong, we raise our voices in pink, and we stand up against his policies."
This is not the first time Democratic congresswomen have used color to make a statement. In 2017, they wore white to highlight women's rights during Trump's first speech to a joint session of Congress. Last year, they wore white again to defend reproductive rights during President Biden's State of the Union address.
