Weather Alert in Morocco: Meteorological Directorate Issues Updated Bulletin for Heavy Rains and Strong Winds

The General Directorate of Meteorology (DGM) in Morocco has issued an updated weather alert, Bulletin No. 2026/35, maintaining an "Orange" level of vigilance for several provinces across the Kingdom. This urgent notification, released on Wednesday, February 4, 2026, warns of significant rainfall and local stormy winds expected to hit the northern and Rif regions. Citizens are advised to take necessary precautions as a powerful weather system moves across the Mediterranean coast and the Atlas foothills.

Expected Precipitation and Regional Impact

Starting from midnight on Thursday, February 5, 2026, and continuing until 11:00 PM, intense rainfall is forecasted for several northern provinces. According to the DGM, the distribution of rainfall amounts is expected as follows:

  • Chefchaouen and Tetouan: Predicted rainfall between 50 mm and 90 mm, posing a risk of localized flooding and rising water levels in valleys.

  • Larache: Predicted rainfall between 30 mm and 50 mm.

These heavy downpours will be accompanied by strong, gusty winds, which could impact visibility and disrupt local transportation networks.

Safety Recommendations and Government Response

In light of the Orange alert, local authorities are mobilizing emergency services to monitor flood-prone areas, particularly in the mountainous Rif region where landslides are a common concern during intense rain. Residents in the affected provinces are urged to avoid proximity to riverbeds and to exercise extreme caution while driving on coastal and mountain roads. The DGM will continue to provide real-time updates as the weather system evolves throughout the day on Thursday.
