Saudi Cabinet Urges UAE to Withdraw Forces from Yemen Within 24 Hours Amid Rising Tensions
RIYADH – The Saudi Council of Ministers issued a firm statement on Tuesday, expressing hope that the United Arab Emirates (UAE) will respond to Yemen’s official request for the withdrawal of its forces within 24 hours. The announcement, carried by the Saudi Press Agency (SPA), marks a significant escalation in diplomatic rhetoric between the two key members of the Arab Coalition.
Call for De-escalation and Wisdom
The Saudi Cabinet emphasized the need for wisdom and the principles of "brotherhood and good neighborliness." Riyadh urged the cessation of any military or financial support to the Southern Transitional Council (STC) or any other parties within Yemen. The statement underscored Saudi Arabia's commitment to the stability of the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the preservation of bilateral relations with Abu Dhabi.
The Council expressed "regret" over the failure of calming efforts, citing an "unjustified escalation" that contradicts the foundations of the Coalition to Restore Legitimacy in Yemen and breaks previous promises made to the Kingdom.
Military Action in Mukalla Port
The diplomatic tension follows a limited military strike conducted by the Coalition's Joint Forces Command early Tuesday. Brig. Gen. Turki al-Malki, the Coalition spokesperson, confirmed that the strike targeted foreign military support delivered to the STC at Mukalla Port.
According to Al-Malki, two vessels arriving from the UAE's Fujairah port entered Mukalla on December 27-28 without official permits. The crews reportedly disabled tracking systems and offloaded a large shipment of weapons and combat vehicles destined for STC forces in the eastern provinces of Hadramout and Al-Mahrah.
Protecting Sovereignty and Security
In response to a direct request from the President of the Yemeni Presidential Leadership Council, the Coalition conducted the airstrike to neutralize the threat posed by these unauthorized arms. Minister of Information Salman bin Yousef Al-Dosari reiterated that Saudi Arabia "will not hesitate to take necessary measures to counter any threat to its national security."
Riyadh reaffirmed its full support for the Yemeni government’s sovereignty and commended the Coalition's role in protecting civilians and preventing the expansion of the conflict.
