# Egypt: 6 Officials to Face Trial Over Wahat Gas Line Explosion
The Egyptian Public Prosecution has referred six defendants, including employees of a private contracting company and an engineering consulting firm, to the Misdemeanor Court for their alleged roles in the Wahat gas line explosion. The blast occurred on April 30 near Nawal University in 6 October City, resulting in eight fatalities, including two dental students, and injuring 16 others with burns and suffocation.

Investigations revealed that the explosion was caused by a sudden rupture in the pipeline during excavation work for a natural gas facility development project. The rupture was attributed to a loader belonging to the contracting company colliding with the gas line without prior coordination with the natural gas company, leading to a massive gas leak and ignition.

The defendants face charges of causing death and injury due to negligence, as well as violating the Natural Gas Law. According to Article 238 of the Egyptian Penal Code, if the negligence results in the death of more than three people, the penalty can range from one to seven years in prison, or up to ten years in severe cases.
