Philippine Police Arrest Former President Duterte at ICC's Request
Former Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte has been arrested by the Philippine police, acting on a warrant issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC). Duterte, who served as President from 2016 to 2022, is accused of committing crimes against humanity ¹.
According to the Presidential Communications Office, the Philippine National Police (PNP) received a copy of the ICC's arrest warrant and executed it upon Duterte's arrival in Manila from Hong Kong. Duterte's arrest was captured on video by police officers wearing body cameras.
The ICC's investigation into Duterte's alleged crimes began in 2016, focusing on the thousands of killings that took place during his administration's war on drugs. Prosecutors claim that between 12,000 to 30,000 people were killed due to their alleged involvement in drugs, with some of these killings allegedly carried out by police outside of judicial proceedings ¹.
The Philippines had withdrawn from the ICC in 2018, but the court maintained its jurisdiction over crimes committed while the country was still a member.
