Panama President Accuses Trump of Lying
In a shocking turn of events, Panama's President, José Raúl Mulino, has publicly accused US President Donald Trump of lying about Washington's supposed efforts to regain control over the Panama Canal [1).
During a speech before the US Congress and Senate, Trump claimed that the US had begun taking back control of the canal. However, Mulino vehemently denied these claims, stating that the canal remains under Panamanian control and that no discussions regarding a transfer of control had taken place with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio or any other official.
Mulino emphasized that cooperation between Panama and the US is based on clear agreements regarding issues of mutual interest. This development comes after Trump announced his intention to control the Panama Canal during his inauguration speech on January 20, citing concerns over China's increasing influence in the region.
In response, Mulino announced that Panama would not renew its memorandum of understanding with China regarding the Belt and Road Initiative. Additionally, Boris Moreno, the Panama Canal's Deputy Administrator, clarified that China does not directly operate the canal, but rather manages two ports operated by CK Hutchinson Holdings, a Hong Kong-based company.
