Where is the European Union Heading? An Analysis by Former UN Advisor

 ### Where is the European Union Heading? An Analysis by Former UN Advisor

The European Union (EU) is at a crossroads, facing complex internal and external challenges that could redefine its future. Dr. Elie Hatem, former advisor to the UN Secretary-General, provided a comprehensive assessment of the EU's trajectory during an interview on RT Arabic. His insights shed light on geopolitical tensions, internal divisions, and the emergence of a multipolar world that are influencing the EU's current state and its future direction.

### Internal Divisions and Sovereignty Concerns

According to Dr. Hatem, the EU is not a monolithic entity but rather a complex structure composed of nations with distinct political and cultural orientations. He pointed out that some member states, such as Hungary and potentially Greece, are contemplating an exit to preserve their sovereignty. This sentiment reflects growing nationalist movements and skepticism towards centralized EU governance. Meanwhile, France and Germany remain the dominant powers, although Germany's influence extends to other Anglo-Saxon-aligned nations within the union.

### A Shifting Global Order

Dr. Hatem emphasized the impact of the Ukraine crisis on accelerating a shift towards a multipolar world order. Emerging powers such as Russia, China, and India are challenging the traditional Western-dominated geopolitical landscape. The BRICS countries are positioning themselves economically and politically to counterbalance Western influence, which presents significant challenges to the EU's cohesion and foreign policy.

### Dependency on the United States

One of the critical issues highlighted by Dr. Hatem is the EU's reliance on the United States, particularly in defense and foreign policy. He suggested that the EU must reassess this dependency to secure its strategic autonomy. Historically, France maintained a policy of sovereignty within the EU framework, as seen during François Mitterrand's presidency. However, subsequent administrations, notably under Presidents Jacques Chirac and Nicolas Sarkozy, aligned more closely with NATO under U.S. leadership.

### The Possibility of a European Military Alliance

The idea of establishing an independent European military alliance has been a topic of discussion. Dr. Hatem noted that while the concept includes not only EU member states but also other European nations, the lack of a unified foreign policy and varying national interests pose significant challenges. For example, Germany's diplomatic approach towards Turkey is influenced by its large Turkish diaspora, differing from the perspectives of France or Greece.

### The Path Forward for the European Union

Dr. Hatem concluded by emphasizing the need for the EU to reevaluate its structural and policy frameworks. This includes addressing economic, political, and defense-related challenges to ensure the union's stability and relevance in an evolving global landscape. With internal divisions and external pressures mounting, the EU's path forward requires strategic reforms and a balanced approach to international relations.
