# US Inmate Chooses Firing Squad Execution
A convicted inmate in South Carolina, USA, has chosen to be executed by firing squad next month, marking the first time this method has been used in the country in 15 years.
Brad Sigmon, 67, will be the first inmate in South Carolina to opt for the newly introduced firing squad method over lethal injection or the electric chair. The execution is scheduled to take place on March 7.
Since 1976, only three inmates have been executed by firing squad in the United States, all of whom were in Utah. The last instance was in 2010.
During the execution, Sigmon will be strapped to a chair, with a hood placed over his head and a target pinned over his heart. Three volunteer shooters will then fire from behind a small opening, approximately 15 feet (4.6 meters) away.
