Tokyo Requests Exemption from Trump's Tariffs

Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya has urged his U.S. counterpart, Marco Rubio, to exempt Japan from President Donald Trump's plan to impose a 25% tariff on steel and aluminum imports from Japan.

### Diplomatic Efforts for Tariff Exemption

According to a statement issued by Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Iwaya met with Rubio on the sidelines of the Munich Security Conference in Germany. During the meeting, he also expressed his desire to hold security talks that would include foreign and defense ministers from both countries "at an early date," as reported by Japan's Kyodo News Agency.

### Strengthening Bilateral Relations

The meeting followed discussions between Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba and U.S. President Donald Trump at the White House on February 7. Both leaders agreed to pursue a "new golden era" in bilateral relations and committed to cooperation in defense, economy, and technology.

### Continued Economic Cooperation

The statement from Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs emphasized that Iwaya and Rubio "confirmed their commitment to close communication to strengthen economic relations between Japan and the United States." As part of this commitment, Iwaya formally submitted Japan's request for exemption from the U.S. tariffs.
